The Symantec Management Platform (NS7)

will not run on 2008, at least not until version 7.1 comes out. See Altiris KB46349 - Platform Support Matrix.

At the Endpoint Management Customer Feedback forum yesterday, the question was asked of the participants how everyone would feel if SMP 7.1 was ONLY supported on Server 2008 x64.  I didn't notice anyone objecting to this...there was some commentary that it would speed up the testing cycle since there would only be one platform to test against.  Of course the tricky problem with that is with regards to migrating exising SMP 7.x environments to 7.1 (once again, glad we waited)!

Its an idea being looked at.

Its an idea being looked at. Rest assured, any migration from 32 - 64bit SMP would also be carefully researched

It's a difficult 'answer' to find as the original question

didn't state if he was asking about an Altiris server (part of the architecture) or a managed client. I think it's quite clear from the answers here that
a) You can't install Altiris Notification Server on Windows 2008, at least until 7.1 is released.
b) A managed client running 2008 is supported
c) Running a site server (task or package) service has some support, but not all.

In any case, if we could put a big bold sticky on top of the forums, it would be KEEP checking the Platform Support Matrix article - Altiris KB46349.
