Altiris Agent 7 Rollout - Limits?
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 3 comments
Just some quick queries regarding rolling out of the Altiris NS7 Agent onto clients.
1. Is there any way to throttle the initial HTTP push/pull of the agent to each client? I.e for remote sites with no local package server? (Besides manually staging the rollout to multiple groups of PCs)
2. Is there a hard limit on the amount of pull/pushes that will be accepted by the NS? (For those clients who need to connect to it directly) I.e will 500 clients (in theory) all attempt to make a connection with NS if you manually pushed the agent out..maxing out the network connection thats on the NS?
Thanks!

Good questions
You can stagger the rollout by breaking up the collections used to deploy the agent, or by manually importing via a .csv file. I don't know of any specific throttling settings, but the communication impact is minimal, and shouldn't affect your server. The agent download is about 6MB, so network contention may be an issue.
Awhile back, I thought I read that the Deployment Server internally throttles agent deployments at 25 installs, but I have never run across anything that indicated this behavior transferred to the NS.

1st Rule of Connect Club: Mark the post that helped you the most as a 'solution'. 2nd Rule of Connect Club:You must talk about Connect club.
You can tweak the command line
You can tweak the command line options (at least on NS6...I assume the same on 7) to adust the "chunk size" of each "chunk" of the AeXNSC.exe that the agent downloads, and the "pause_ms" value of how many seconds to wait between "chunks". If you set these appropriately (chunk size to 4096, pause to 10000 maybe or higher) it will slow it down a lot. I haven't tested this under NS7, so YMMV.

Excellent.
Thanks for the responses..
I ask because I did a partially staggered rollout last night, to about 5 different remote sites totally about 100 PCs in total.
I noticed that after the collections/filters re-updated with the PC counts that there were a few remaining..
Pushing the agent again for a 2nd time and it ended up hitting a few more PCs..bit odd
