  • 1.  Altiris agent fails to install, but server says install went OK.

    On our machines, which carry Agent 6.9, we are now testing also with agent 7.
    however, on some machines it gives an error, and uninstalls itself due to some installpath it cannot find (When will symantec people learn to program useful error-messages?).

    Only way around this is to uninstall the old client, clean the registry from Altiris, and install the new client, followed by the old one (Altiris 6 is still our production environment).

    Why don't I get an error in Altiris 7 that the install was incorrect? I only get errors when pc's aren't available, but not installing an agent is the same as not working, and therefor should return an error.

    It sounds like you're doing an upgrade over the top, and trying to point to a dev server? I don't expect that it would work, but confirm your steps. Also, can you elaborate on "some installpath it cannot find"?

    The installation of 2 agents works fine on 95% of our workstations. Only some won't install the new agent.

    The error is:
    2009-10-22 14:46:29: GetInstallPath could not get the install path from InstallDir.
    2009-10-22 14:46:29: Agent install path is not found.

    And then it gets rid of any install-settings, leaving the temp-dir, and messing up HD space.
    Some workstations have 10+ tempdirs with all the same files.

    The only solution so far is:
    - Doing an uninstall of the "old" 6.9 agent.
    - Deleting anything directories/files left
    - Deleting regkeys HKLM\Software\Altiris
    Then:
    - Install new client 7.0x pointing to new server
    - Install old client 6.9 poiting to old server.

    The reinstall is exactly the same process as the initial installation, so why won't it find any install path?

    It should be c:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent.
    The installpath for the 6.9 agent is c:\Program Files\Altirs\AClient

    Any ideas would be helpfull.

    I thought you were just doing a typo. The Deployment Server (6.9) and the Notification Server (Altiris Agent) are two mutually exclusive agents. You don't need to remove one to have the other. Are you using a custom install path? See Altiris KB48236 for details on the agent push log file.

    No, the installpath is default on both Altiris 6 and Altiris 7.
    I did know you can use the new agent on the 6 server, but we use them both because we're still in the process of getting familiar with seven, and our predecessors weren't that nice with using version 6.

    Are you pushing the agent from the console, or manually installing the agent? Altiris KB38738 indicates this error, and some possible work arounds.

    I get the same result, wether i'm pushing from the console, or installing the agent from the webpage that's found on the console where you can push the agent.
    Completely manual installs, i've not tried yet, as i've already got a workaround.

    I'll check out the KB, it's handy to know and have. Bookmarked it.
