  • 1.  Altiris Database Question

    Posted Dec 19, 2013 05:56 AM

    Hi All,

I had a question about Altiris...Our Altiris was installed on a one server then it was moved to another as the server it was installed on wasn't powerful enough to handle the tasks and it was running slow, at some point it was moved to another server. My question is this was done by someone other than me. We want to get rid of the old server but when it is shutdown Altiris running on the new server does not work any longer it cannot connect to database. Does this mean that the Altiris database is still on the old server and wasn't moved when the new installation was done? and if so could I get some help on how to move it. When the old server is shut down and I launch Altiris on the new server I get the message to log in to a different database " the console was not able to connect to the site you selected. enter a user name and password to connect to the site or select cancel to select another site" and sometimes it just bombs out on the connecting to SQL database message at the start. We currently have Altiris 6.9 installed on the new server as this is what our licence supported. the old server is a windows 2003 and our new server is windows 2008.

    Many thanks,

    Gramzon

Where is the settings that show which database Altiris is conencted to? I've tried looking for settings in the deployment station but can't find it?

    Hi Gramzon,

In 6.9 You can find in Adminstrative tools--> ODBC Settings--> system DSN tab-->select the name and click on configure and you click on next you can find the current database server and the name of the database which you have connected.

I'm using 6.9. Is there a way to check what Altiris is connected to via Altiris itself?

    Hi Gramzon,

It is not possible to run the DS server with out the ODBC setting configured. You either do not know where the sql server is that the ds server is using or do not have permissions to open the odbc applet.

if you are not seeing anything in the applet, you might be looking at the 64bit version of ODBC, in which case, you have  need to start the ds server up and if it says it cannot connect, to run through the sub applet we have to point to another sql server and see where it is the ds thinks it is supposed to connect to the sql server.

Other than this there is no other option to check the database name in the console.

when I click on connect and look at what it is currently connected to, the server is (default) and the ODBC data source name is blank nothing is selected. it just has the standard installation path d:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server underneath this there is an option to click ODBC administrator, I can see the Symantec database for endpoint protection but not Altiris inside this?

I had a similar problem.  Altiris eXpress Database was not listed under System DSN.

I found you need to run the 32-bit version of ODBC - C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe
