Altiris Helpdesk Solution - POP3 E-Mail Inbox: inline images?
Updated: 15 Jun 2010 | 3 comments
Hey folks, I'm sure this question has been answered before but my searches are turning up empty. Is it possible to have the helpdesk accept images that are inline in e-mails? We can see files if they are attached but not if they are pasted inline into Outlook (which is what most of our users do). Please let me know; thanks!

In version 6 of HelpDesk it is not possible. I do not know the new version - 7.

I've seen cases where inline images have worked, and a fair few which have not. If you mailserver is exchange, it seems to do the 'right' thing as far as the Altiris helpdesk is concerned and embedd the images in a format which the Helpdesk can splice out. I've seen Lotus systems which seem to embed the signature header OK, but then fail to embed the images in a way which the helpdesk likes.
For example, this type of multipart embedding does not appear to work (From Lotus Notes),
But this type does (using exchange),
It does seem to me that the email sent via the exchange server looks to be formatted better for multipart, so it might be if multipart attachments don't obey the helpdesk multipart parser they are simply dropped.
Maybe someone else can shed some light on this?

Hi UltraMagnus, Are you using
Hi UltraMagnus,
Are you using Exchange? I think the reason why inline images work when you have an Exchange server is because Exchange is a strange hybrid of MTA (Mail Transport Agent) and automated MUA (Mail User Agent) . It doesn't just transport e-mail messages, it renders them down and parses them first. From there it reconstructs the equivalent e-mail message from the parsed data which it then passes it on to the user's e-mail interface or another system.
Odd I know, but its just the way exchange works. The plus side for the Altiris Helpdesk is that no matter how your email clients embed inline images, Exchange will reconstruct it nicely before passing it on. There are of course downsides in other areas for Exchange's MUA behaviour, but put that aside for the sake of this discussion.
Kind Regards,
