Altiris Image Deployment not attaching to domain.

Created: 08 May 2013 | 11 comments

We are having issues with our CMS 7.1 for Deployment of Images via Upgrade and new PC deployment.  All tasks succeed but when it come to attaching PC to Domain it fails.  We are then left with a machine we cannot login into.  Anyone having this issues?  Please any suggestions would be great!!

how are you attaching to the domain?  From a configuration task, or from the imaging task?

We are trying to attach to a domain but fail to do so.  Image Task.  We also tried not joining a domain but would still fail.

not joining a domain - the task fails?

Disable using DeployAnywhere and see if it works.  That might narrow down the problem.  If the deploy task is failing to run (that is, it returns a failed message) then the domain join is not the issue as that doesn't happen until the system reboots.

When we first tested the deployment we had success with imaging then overnight something changed.  Now we can't deploy any of our first image jobs.  We already tried diabling Deploy Anywhere but still nothing.

Well, they're deploying, right - just not joining the domain, correct?

Is it possible that the account being used to join the domain was modified in AD?

When a change happens "overnight" there are generally only a couple of possible causes:  1) something in the environment changed, or 2) one of the nightly processes that runs in the SMP modified something.

For the former, AD changes are the most likely.

For the latter, a replication of data is most likely.  For this one, I'd ask somethign simple like - do you have package services on the NS, or are you using a site server, or is this just a single server installation?

We got it working this morning.  For some reason everyone assumed that installation was complete when login screen appeared.  As soon as you login SYSPREP would run and then reboot 2x thus telling me it wasn't finish with deployment.  So I instructed the techs not to touch for 15 mins.  Then what would you know they were able to login with no issues.  Also just to make sure I deleted the PC name from AD before we ran the image deployment.  Does this sound familiar?

hmmm...  Deleting from AD - not sure.  But waiting for the deployment to finish - I think possibly so.  I know that there are changes happening on the system during that time, and it would make sense what you saw.  I've just not personally tried to log-on during MiniSetup.

Maybe someone else has?  Do you lock the keyboard until the final phase to prevent this?

Fifteen minutes is quite a long time to have to wait.  Without DeployAnywhere, my clients can logon as soon as they're at the CAD screen.  With DA, GhostUser does the initial logon but reboots.  Again, once the CAD screen is visible they can logon.

The ONLY time I've had issues was if the NIC drivers didn't install.

I do my domain join via my unattend file.  You also should have a local admin set up so the machine isn't unusable.  This will give you access to the machine if the domain is inaccessible for any reason.  Let me know if you need assistance.

I'm agreeing with SF here that this is a long wait.  Seems almost as if something is hanging, or...  I don't know.  Maybe a close look at the panther logs would tell us where the delay is.

You may also look at the setup.etl file in the Panther folder.  Load that into event viewer (open saved log).  Also check out event viewer once the machine is accessible.

Update:

We are still witnessing some PC that do not attach to Domain but some do without incident.  I am not sure what I can do to get a majority of successful deployment.
