Altiris Image does not deploy

Created: 02 Oct 2013 | 9 comments

Good day all,

I have a deployment server that I set up and when I try to deploy an image to image it will boot itself into PXE and then just hang. The imaging process does not start. I am using version 7.1. Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you Access the hard drive in preboot? Did you Had a look into log file?
Are other Tasks working in preboot?

Yes, the hard drive is accessible in PXE. Which log files? Once it boots into PXE the next step should be to load the image I have made, but it doesn't, it just hangs there. I can send it Reboot to Production task and it does, so yes other tasks work while it is in PXE.

Is Ghost starting or just sits in PXE the whole time?

No. Ghost, or in this case RapidDeploy, does not start. It just sits in PXE until I reboot it.

Hi, please have a look for logs in x:\program files\altiris\altiris agent\logs. There should be an agent.log and a pectagent.log for Minimum. Further there should be an Client deploy log.

If you can change the Rdeploy to Ghost, we are recomending our customer to use Ghost, if you can get the logs after you run Ghost form the area  x:\program files\altiris\altiris agent\logs after the program fails.

Can you check in the C:/Program Files/Altiris/Altiris Agents/Deployment/Task Handler//Rdeploy folder and see if there is a firx.exe in the version folder you are using and copy that firm.exe and go back one step to Task Handler and paster that exe there. That was firm.exe was not moved during develpoment and needs to be in the task handler folder.

The firm.exe file is responsible for the boot in to production. Here the issue is different it goes into PXE and hangs. Does it shows up any error message in PXE or whether it hangs in the x prompt. If it is in the x prompt try to get the logs from  x:\program files\altiris\altiris agent\logs and we can check it.

Just a thought here as I see this appearing as an issue more frequently in various environments...

Could this possibly be caused by Windows 8 being the pre-installed OS on the target machines? If PXE is not deploying an image or failing at some stage, it could be due to the UEFI/GPT drive information?
