  • 1.  Altiris PXE with CITRIX VM Provisioning Clients

I will try to describe this as best as possible. Back this fall Altiris was setup but got pushed to the side as another project was deemed "more important" and we continued to use our old ghost system in the meantime. The other project is using Citrix Provisioning Server for VM Clients/Thin Clients. The problem is both DS and CITRIX require PXE servers. I was assigned the task to get Altiris working finally since my Network Manager is busy working on the CITRIX side. I am sure it is possible to make both of these systems to play nice with each other but unfortunately I do not know where to begin. I am pretty positive that either ALTIRIS or CITRIX will have to share a PXE server somehow but I am not sure on how to do that. I have been trying to work with my network manager but so far he seems to think that Altiris DS does not need PXE and is telling me to find a way to make it work without PXE. I am not convinced of that as I believe it needs PXE to communicate back and forth with the deployment server. If anyone can provide some insight on where I can go for some detailed resources I would greatly appreciate it. I need to get the basics working before I attack the bigger stuff. Other things on my Altiris Task List are:

-Setting up file storage repositories for our individual schools where they can host the images for their buildings so they do not have to go across the WAN network to deploy images.

-Setting up HIIS for Hardware independent imaging

-Setting up the Altiris Help Desk Module.

Forgive my ignorance as this is a bit different than what I am used to with our old Ghost enterprise setup. Thank you.

You should be able to tell your altiris PXE server what MAC addresses you want it to service. Or you can give the server a list of MAC addresses not to service. This can be done through the PXE configurator utility.

Well the way my Network Manager has CITRIX setup it is feeding all computers that have PXE enabled in the BIOS. As soon as I turn PXE on a computer it tries to boot from a CITRIX VM. I am guess I would have to do something similiar on the CITRIX side and tell that what MAC addresses it should service. I do not know how to do that but I will have my Network Manager check into it. I am pretty sure that is what is going to need to be done. My problem is my network Manager is stuck on how Ghost works and thinks Altiris works in the same way. He mentioned that I should try using a hidden boot parttiton on the local computer that contains the Altiris Boot information and stuff like that. I think segregating the MAC address is probably the easier way don't you think?

Hey, I was flipping through some of the training documentation that I got from Altiris and it says something about using Altiris with computers that do not support PXE by putting a the Boot information on the hard drive. Where can I find info on how to do that? Is that something that has to be set up by hand or can that be pushed down using the Altiris Agent?
