Altiris PXE Server

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone can offer me some advice:)

We currently have a DS server running with version 6.9 with a local PXE Server, everything is working perfectly.

I just installed two more PXE servers in remote sites using the remote install procedure successfully.

Question:
Now that my machines can pxe boot in the remote offices, I don't want them downloading the Pre boot environment (We are using winpe 150mb) over the WAN where our DS is located. Thats just ridiculous.

Do we have to manually copy the express share to the remote pxe servers or can this be automated.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Nick

I believe that it will

I believe that it will automatically copy over your boot images, though you will need to redirect your boot options to a local image store unless you want to pull your images across you WAN. If you use a local image file on the machine, you will not need to worry about that though.

PXE

Have you set up PXE redirection on your remote PXE servers yet? If not see the link below. Once this is done then everything will download from your pre-boot enviorments locally.

If you have not setup PXE-redirection here is a how to on it:

PXE

Redirection is the way to go. However, DS 6.9 PXE has a bug with the redirection.

According to a KB Article ID: 41019 http://kb.altiris.com

KNOWN ISSUE: Receiving error "Unable to boot to DOS/Linux/WinPE automation" when running jobs that use PXE redirection

Once I check this KB I was able to do redirection.

Hope this helps.

IP Helper

Make sure that you don't have IP Helper configured on your switches/routers to pass PXE requests between sites. That will keep the PXE requests local so the only PXE server(s) that could respond would be local servers.

Question

What script or procedure did you use to install the remote pxe server and also did you install it through a job from your development console or manually on the client? I'm trying to do the same but still looking on how to automate the installation from the development console. Thanks in advance.

I use dfs

i use DFS to synchronize data during low bandwidht hours.
So at night DFS will synchronise all data, jobes, and PXE settings.
his is a automated process, so no steps to be done manually.
