Altiris reboots before imaging

  • 1.  Altiris reboots before imaging

I have my deployment server set up so that when a computer it has not seen before is added to the domain, it runs the initial deployment routine. All runs fine and it loads the menu for the list of images to use. It even shows the blue box that says: "Press ESC to abort or any other key to continue". The issue is that when it "begins" the imaging process, it says:

    "Reboot command from server"
    "Booting to automation..."
    "Closed TCP stack"
    "TCP stack down"

Once it reboots it processes the pxe-boot options, but then exits and goes about loading the OS normally. I am using FreeDOS, but have also tried it with Linux. Anyone have any ides to help?

What is the status of the Initial Deployment job when this happens?

It says that is sending the Wake-on-Lan command. It just sits like that, I have not noticed it change.

That usually means that the computer isn't connecting to DS so DS is trying to wake it up. If you reboot it does it try to boot PXE again?

Yes, it says initiating PXE boot process, and then says exiting PXE boot. It's almost like the server connects with it and then tells it to boot normally.

Anyone have some ideas to help me with this? I have still been unable to uncover the solution.

Well once the client is in DS it won't run Initial Deployment again so that's the reason it just boots to Windows after that first time. I don't see anything in your first post that would indicate a problem. It should do what you said and then start imaging.

That is what I was assuming with the second boot-up after it restarts. I am wondering if something is not configured properly with the DS server. As I mentioned, it will pull up the initial deployment screen just fine, after it runs the countdown to initiate the imaging, it says it recieves a reboot command from the server, without sending the image to the computer. The Deployment console stays at the command "Sending wake-on-lan signal".

Have you added “option 066 Boot Server Host name” in your DHCP scope (Scope / Scope Options)?

    You might also check this:
In the DS console. Tools / PXE Configuraion. Click Status. Is everything green and ok?

The option 066 is not on the DHCP server. It was working fine before my server crashed and everything needed to be reinstalled. After the install it is giving me this issue.

All of the statuses in the configuration utility show green (ready). I am only using the one server for my PXE and DS.

Ah. So your computer and your DS is in the same vlan.
Try enable logging in the “PXE Configuration utility“ / “Data logs”.
    Do you get something useful?

I don't seem to be getting anything useful. From what I can understand in the log it is going through fine and begins to setup the connection. The it's like it automatically reports that it has succeeded right away.

I just uninstalled Altiris and reinstalled the server and all options. I am still getting the same error. The PC's are getting the reboot command before they get the image, even though it goes through the whole process to start the imaging.
