This issue has been solved. See solution.
Hello there!

right now we have a good backup system using some external drives, and scheduling backups.

I am looking at Altiris Recovery Solution and would like to know what you guys think about it.

what are some nice features that it has, and if its simple to setup and configure.

I am looking for something that can keep different versions of files backed up and that would make the work of recovering a file, folder, or even teh hard drive simple.

would you guys recommend the altiris recovery solution?

Good Option

Hi,

I think that the option is good, in my case I have this solution and worked very good some key features is that you can configure what is need you backup, (partial snapshot - specified files or folders; or full snapshot with the operative system), also you can configure retention time of these files (with the diferent versions, can you exclude files or folder and more.

Yes

We have been using RS for about 5 years now and it has, overall, performed quite well.  As sugeily said, there is a nice degree of configuration you can do, specifically around including or excluding file types, folders (based on names) or drive letters.  You can also configure alternate retention periods per file type (so, keep 14 days worth of revisions to .PST files, but 60 days of revisions to .DOC files, removed deleted .DOC files after 30 days, but keep deleted .PST files for 60 days).  Using the Full System Recovery, you can restore a workstation back to its exact state of the last snapshot from a blank hard drive (in the case where the hard drive fails, or the laptop was stolen and replaced with a like model).

Please, if you do decide to purchase RS, read through the best practices document (AKB 47687 and AKB 26764) along with the RS documentation.

Thanks,
Kyle

Thank you!

Thank you guys for your responses. I think it sounds very promissing. Now, another question i have is what do i need to install so the recovery solution works? I just have the Altiris Deployment Solution. I do not have the notification server. Also, what version should i use?

NS7/RS7 were recently released

Well Notificatoin Server 7 and Recovery Solution 7 were recently released.  Since you don't have an existing NS infrastructure (just the DS) then I'd say it makes sense to go with RS7.  As far as I know there have not been any major changes with RS7 vs RS6.x other than improved OS support, bug fixes, etc.  There are Release Notes on the https://kb.altiris.com that you can review.

YOu can download the core Altiris 7 installer "Symantec Installation Manager" here:
https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=77987

I suggest installing the core Symantec Managemetn Platform first, then add on RS.

Thanks,
Kyle

Server 2003

For now, NS7 (and NS6/RS 6 for that matter) only install on Windows 2003.  Server 2008 support is due out next year sometime.  Also, must be 32bit Windows (though you can run your database off-box on a 64-bit host).  Full requirements are here:
