I may suggest to check the state of the Altiris database in SQL - it could be damaged.

But even with a damaged DB, I would think the altiris service would start.  You'd just get a log file FULL of errors.

I'd be more toward a repair of Altiris from the SIM.  Run the Symantec Installation Manager and do a repair on the Symantec Management Platform.  It sounds like when the system shut-down hard, you may have damaged some files, or perhaps some dependencies were lost, or something of that nature.  A repair may resolve any issue like this by accessing the MSI and replacing damaged or missing files.

IF you can get the Log Viewer running (in the Diagnostics folder of Altiris or Symantec under Start, depending on version), the log viewer may give you additional information, or it may be so overwhelming as to be absolutely worthless.

Start with a repair, verify the DB and your connection to it, stuff like that - the kinds of things you'd normally check after a hard-failure.  When a system can't shut down properly, open files can be damaged.  I know.  My OS at home wont start now because of a memory failure that caused a BSOD and left some open files damaged since they were being written to at the time of failure.

    GL mate!

    Hey

Thank you for all  . I try to repair altiris in Symantec Installtion Manger following your suggestion.

When I open it  the message shown me to upgrade SIM  to up-to-date version. If cancel or Postpone  the upgrade. it was not allow me to repair or did anything.

no choice for me , After upgrade the Sim Complete, I try to Reconfigure Product but It failed... I try 2-3 times. It s Failed Everytime.

Umm I never upgrade SIM before  after I upgrade SIM. How I doing For nextstep ?

Well, therein lies the tricky part, and at this point, I think you'd be best getting some help from Support at Symantec.

In the SIM, you can modify the settings to use the local PL file so you don't have to do an update to the installer.  Even if you DO the upgrade though, you simply highlight the product that is installed and you can repair it.

if the Reconfigure is failing, then you have to look to LogViewer to find out why.  Support has run into installation and console issues a lot, and while looking at the system, it's generally not too hard to find something that is out of place once you know what working systems look like.  It's much harder though to do that based on what is a very generic "error" like you are seeing. via email.

Were I you, my next stop would be logs, but frankly, I'd also be looking at environment.

    Why?

Everyone comes back and does this:  It was working fine one day, and then the next day it was suddenly broken.  A tech then asks - well, what changed?  When the reply comes back "Nothing", we know someone is lying or uninformed.  Something changed.  MOST of the time, we run into GPO's and such that screw things up.  For instance, a GPO that changes IIS settings, or modifies login accounts, or stuff like this.

You'll probably have to look for what changed, look at the logs, or something like that.

Again, GL.  Sorry we've not been able to diagnose it right-off.  These are not quite so simple of issues to find often.

Based on what is in the AEXNSVC.jpg file about no root element, I'd say your CoreSettings.config file is corrupted.  This is an XML file, so copy it from where it is and rename the copied file to coresettings.xml.  Try to open the file in Internet Explorer.  I'm going to guess that it will not open, or IE will refuse to render the entire file.  If this is the case, I'd try restoring a backup file (sometimes you'll see a CoreSettings.config.xxx file); if there is no backup file then I would restore one from your most recent NS backup (you do backup your NS, right?!?!?)

KSchroeder is right. I had this issue long time ago. Same error and my coresettings.config was corrupted. Just restore from backup and it will work very well.
