This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am creating a new Windows XP SP3 image on a new workstation to use to image additional workstations. When I install the Client from the deployment server, it installs successfully and the client starts. When I reboot the workstation the client service does not start automatically. Event viewer gives two errors, "Timeout waiting for Altiris client service to connect" and "Altiris client service failed to start due to the following error: The serive did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". The service can be started manually by selecting it and selecting start and gives no errors when doing so. I have tried installing the client again from both the network share location and the deployment server. I have completely reimaged the workstation from scratch and started again and the problem continued.

Is this the only service not starting on the machine?

Is the workstation in a domain? If you install the client before installing SP3, do you have the same outcome?

This is the only service that does not start. It is on the domain, however other machines in the same OU on the domain seem to be working fine. I have not tried to install it without SP3, but I'm going to try it and see how that goes. Thanks

SP3 was the problem. I unistalled it and rolled back to SP1. The client then started everytime I rebooted. I then installed SP2 then SP3 and its working fine now. I guess I will just need to remember to install the client before I install SP3 when creating new images from now on.

That's strange. Never heard of that situation happening before.

Thanks for posting the solution. Hopefully it will help someone in the future.
