    Posted Apr 23, 2012 06:31 AM

    Hi

I am new to Altiris and figured out quite a few things already but I am unable to add new computers as managed. I have pushed the Management Agent to the new computer but Altiris still marks it as unmanaged. I have 1000 computers with licenses out of 1600 licenses.

How do I change a computer from unmanaged to managed.

When the computer is still unmanaged, it probably fails to contact the Notification Server.

How did you push the agent?

    Are the agent settings correct:

    - Does it have a GUID?

    - Did you configure the correct Server and is it reachable from the client (DNS working?)?

I pushed with from Altiris Management console from the server itself.

Not sure if all setting are correct. what should I check. I run the RAAD tool.

If the GUID is same as Computer ID in RAAD then yes it does have.

We only have one server and client points to it.

    Maybe a mismatch of http/https?

Check the NS Server URL (with either RAAD, or the Diagnostic Plugin "aexnsc.exe /diags")

    is it http:// ... or https:// ...

Does it differ to the working clients?

    Firewall in between?

I get the following in the Logs from RAAD.

    2 2012/04/23 02:48:44 PM Invalid data received in HTTP response. Expected 905 bytes, received 0 (-2147024883) CoNetworkTransport(349) AeXNetComms.dll AeXNSAgent.exe
2 2012/04/23 02:48:44 PM PostFile to 'http://*******/Altiris/NS/Agent/PostEvent.aspx?priority=0&source=DCE1EC5E-20F5-4FC8-8B1B-1B48BD931498' failed: Invalid data received in HTTP response. Expected 905 bytes, received 0 (-2147024883) AeXNetworkTransport AeXNetComms.dll AeXNSAgent.exe

This lead me to belief that the setting are both HTTP only. I will check for fire wall. Only one that could be present is windows firewall, would that cause the comms problem?

Every firewall can cause commuication problems :)

Ensure port 80 is open between clients and the server if using HTTP, 443 if using HTTPS.  You can verify this using telnet, e.g. from a command prompt, telnet altiris-server.yourdomain.com 80.

You should also check in IIS that you are not requiring HTTPS if you intend to use HTTP.

Check the logs on your NS to see if there is any addtional acitivity occuring at the server level. It doesn't hurt to restart the Altiris service and the 2 dependent services.

Also, try running aexagentutil.exe /server:<yourservername> to reset the NS server for the agent. As stupid as this sounds it does fix the errors you are seeing your local agent log.

I've had mixed success when trying this thru RAAD, better success when logged directly into the resource in question and mixed success using a remote CMD like psexec.exe.

Ports are open. I connected to the server with the URL.

Can you define "doesn't mark the workstation as managed." more exactly?

I restarted the services on server and the error has dissapeared (Sent basic config) but the system still doesn't mark the workstation as managed. Any other ideas on how to change it to managed?

    OOOPS

Spoke too soon. Error is back. I have a service that is set to manual and not started, should it be started?

If I run a report on field is managed that field is 0. Also the computer Icon doesn't have the yellow agent dot that indicates that it is managed / agent loaded. I am unable to run normal Jobs and tasks on the WS. Also it does not bring it up in the applied to section of the Agent roll out. PLease let me know if this doesn't make sense.

Makes totally sense. I asked before you edited your post "OOOPS ... Error is back ..."

Can you try to delete a non working client from the SMP?

Maybe it succeeds to register from scratch.

Tried that already, actually a few times. The two test WS did get the basic config through to the server. How long should it take to finish the process to get it into managed? Is there some procedure I con follow to speed it up for this test?

If the basic inventory is processed the machine should get managed instantly.

My system still shows it as Unmanaged. I sent the Basic config 2 hours ago. At that stage i worked fine. Now it gives the same error again.

Do you have AMS installed at all? Is it possible the resource has an Asset Status that is not "Active"?

I also have seen where I will have "Active" resources with IsManaged=0. This is a day after all client dates and config updates occured. This is an open ticket with support right now.
