So if I want to use this software,I have to make a window2000 or 2003 server? We have a server. So I am assumming that I would install this on our server.I wonder if I could install win2000 on my computer which is on our network (on our server) and be able to use Altiris's Notification Server.

the documentation. The minimum requirements are laid out in the Altiris knowledgebase. The complete library of documentation is here. I would be very careful about installing this in production without fully understanding the product.

If you are going to install the latest version, Notification Server 7, the requirements are even more specific (and Windows 2000 will not work).

I beleive Altiris does need to be on a server because it needs to have a DHCP server to function properly. Yes you can use a normal desktop and install Server on it then Altiris and use it if you would like. Just make sure if you already have a DHCP server that you disable the one on the workstation when you are not using it or people in the office may get the wrong ip address.

Although the Deployment Server, utilizing PXE requires DHCP, technically the Notification Server does not require DHCP. If all your clients had static IP's, and could resolve and report back to the NS, it would work fine. Regardless, Notification Server (v6) needs to be on a server (Windows 2000 or 2003), and will not install on a domain controller.
