  • 1.  Antispam on Exchange 2007 will not work

    Posted Nov 09, 2007 01:30 PM
I've tried many times now to get the premium antispam part of the Symantec Information Foundation Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange to work, but it just isn't happening.  Looking at the conduit log file, I see stuff like this:
27 Sep 2007 12:56:56 (ERROR:3936.4700): [52101] Intsig: rgm failed to open intsig rules directory in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\6.0\Server.
    27 Sep 2007 12:56:56 (ERROR:3936.4700): [12063] Cannot process 'BrightSig3 Rules'.

The thing I find curious is since Exchange 2007 is 64 bit, why is this an x86 app?  The mail security part itself seems to work fine, i sent myself a zip with the EICAR test virus, and it was caught.  Does anyone have any pointers or ideas for getting the antispam working?

Also, looking in the BMServer.log, i see this:
9 Nov 2007 13:22:57 (ERROR:5548.4136): [37025] Black-White List Module: Error processing rules. No rule files found.
9 Nov 2007 13:22:57 (ERROR:5548.4136): [27051] init_modules: error while calling init function for module libpermit.
9 Nov 2007 13:23:00 (ERROR:5548.4280): [37025] Black-White List Module: Error processing rules. No rule files found.
9 Nov 2007 13:23:00 (ERROR:5548.4280): [27051] init_modules: error while calling init function for module libpermit.
    and in conduit log:
9 Nov 2007 13:27:58 (ERROR:5404.3788): [39003] Failure loading Whitelist and Blacklist Rules using function openPermitRuledir.
    9 Nov 2007 13:27:58 (ERROR:5404.3788): [12063] Cannot process 'Whitelist and Blacklist Rules'.

The "fix" for me was having it relayed through an IIS SMTP server.  I set up a virtual 2003 server on an ESX server.  Our BSD box accepts the mail, does some light scanning, and originally was relaying to our exchange box.  But I found that if mail came from a windows server, the anti-spam worked.  Not exactly sure why, and haven't taken the time to investigate.  Pretty much as non-ideal as it is, but it works, so I'm just going with it for now.  I think it has something to do with "anonymous" mail.
