  • 1.  Antivirus & Antispyware Protection definitions out of date - client "Warning"

    Posted Sep 16, 2010 03:33 PM

We have installed Endpoint v11.6, Enterprise Edition...client only, there is no management config.  A yellow banner with the error message and only an option to "fix" appear at top of the status box (this is not the only status appearing):  "Antivirus and antispyware Protection definitions are out of date".  If you select "Fix", the process loops with the following results:

A 'Warning' condition for the item:  Antivirus & Antispyware Protection with the Definitions date displayed as the date the liveupdate was performed...in this case:  Thurs., Sept. 16, 2010 r2.

Proactive Threat Protection, Network Threat Protection are reflecting "On"

To remedy this we have:  uninstalled and reinstalled the product, installed the latest liveupdate download, but the looping continues.

Is this only a cosmetic problem that may be resolved with a later update of the definitions, etc.?  Are the definitions truly up-to-date?  What do you think is causing this problem?  Are there any other possible solutions available?

The OS is XP SP3, and all Windows patches are up-to-date.

I suspect a possible conflict between SEP and another application on this system since we have many other computers of the same type running without problems.....the only difference is that the other systems are very basic configurations (application are down to the bare minimum), whereas this machine with issues is loaded with many applications ---

    Thanks for any ideas......

    Hi,

Go to C:/Program files/Common Files/Symantec Shared/VirusDefs folder. This  folder  contains the  VirusDefinitions, and represent date, and  revision. Do you see a folder here with the  current Virus definitiion?

Also, I suspect this could be  due to curropted  Virusdefs. Try stopping all SEP services, and   then deleting the  contents of this Virusdefs  folder, and  see.

    Hi , I would suggest

    1) uninstall and liveupdate from add or remove.

    2) STOP the Symantec endpoint protection server from services (start -- run -- Services.msc -- Symantec endpoint protection right click and stop)

    3) and then stop the smc service (start-- run -- smc -stop)

    4) Delete the old Virus definitions from

     c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs

    6) Delete the liveupdate folder,

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

    7) Reinstall liveupdate 3.3 (Lusetup from the CD in the sep folder)

    8) run repair for sep client.

Once you have done the above step follow the instructions on following KB for Automatic updates for the clients,
