Any problems if archiving runs while mailbox move in progress?

Created: 26 Jan 2013 • Updated: 04 Feb 2013 | 4 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

We're moving EV9 archive-enabled mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to 2010 during the night.

That will probably conflict with when EV does its nightly archiving run on the same mailboxes.

Could that cause any serious problems? It'll probably be 10-20 mailboxes simultaneously.

hi alan, i would recommend that you either archive before the mailbox moves or after but not during.

also make sure that you have the SynchInMigrationMode key set on all your EV servers the way you want it.

I am thinking you could end up with orphaned shortcuts which I think could possibly lead to duplicates in the archive.  Any chance of just suspending the archive task for Exch 2003 whilst you do the move.

Thanks guys.

I suppose I could script disabling the mailboxes using EVPM for that night and then enable them the day after. Any powershell commands to do that?

I don't quite understand the purpose of the SynchInMigrationMode registry key. We've never set that so it must be 0. However, we've moved hundreds of mailboxes between Exchange 2003 servers and never had a problem like the technote alludes to.

We're moving mailboxes in batches over a couple of weeks, so suspending the archiving task could have bad effects for the users on 2003 waiting to migrate. I suppose we could resume archiving later the same night. Any powershell command for that, or do I resort to EVPM again?

The 2010 mailboxes are much bigger, so no problem if they skip archiving for one night.

Thanks again.

hmm, looks like the first article i sent was an old technote. someone should delete that. please look here instead where the recommended setting is 1.

you can adjust your archiving schedule at the task level to accomodate for the exchange servers where the mailboxes are coming from/going to.

this is also pretty useful
