Any way to create an OSX Lion managed client without upgrading SEPM?

  • 1.  Any way to create an OSX Lion managed client without upgrading SEPM?

We are running 12.1 without RU1 on our SEPM. We are currently in the process of planning for this upgrade.

However, I have an immediate need to protect computers with OSX Lion.

Is there a way to output a managed OSX Lion compatible client without having SEPM upgraded to RU1?

    Hello,

Do you want to Install SEP 12.1 RU1 on the OSX Lion?

    Here are the steps:

    1) Download the Latest Package from Fileconnect Website.

    2) Unzip the package

    3) You would have to Manually Import the package of the SEP MAC 12.1 RU1 from the package

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH122824

    4) Once done, you could extract the package

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-create-package-mac-client-sepm-ru6

    5) Once done, you can use the same for Installation on your MAC machine.

    Hope that helps!!

Support for Mac OSX 10.7.x (Lion) came with the release of 12.1 RU1 as previously stated. The issue is that there were "fixes" needed on the SEPM side of things to have them be "managed" successfully.

Until you have updated your SEPM to 12.1 RU1, protect your Lion based Macs with a self-managed client. When you have updated your SEPM, convert them to be managed by following:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH131585

    MJD

P.S. The upgrade of a single SEPM to RU1 takes about 10 minutes and does not require a reboot.

    Hi,

I have downloaded the RU1 Mac client from fileconnect but the ZIP only contains a DMG and a uninstall TGZ file. As I understand it SEPM needs a .info or .zip package type to import. When trying to import the zip file from the website it says sylink file is missing.

    Please advise.

    Hello,

    You need to download:

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1_RU1_Part1_Installation_EN.exe

from the Fileconnect, which would have the MAC package.

Check this Article to understand more:

    Hope that helps!!

Thanks for the info. This is unfortunately what I feared.

It's not so much the time taken to upgrade SEPM, it's the and change control and all of that. Creating backout plans, contingencies, etc takes time :)

    Mithun,

I have downloaded this, but when trying to import the SEP_MAC folder it still gives the "sylink is missing" error message. The Windows package folders all contain Sylink files but the mac package (even from this large installation exe) only contains a dmg and tgz file, so it is unable to be imported.

    Hello,

Copy the On-Demand package from Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 CD or ISO to a temporary folder on the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Server HDD and then try to import the same.

    Hope that helps!!

Sorry, I don't follow, I have the 12.1 CD files here, what exactly are you looking at me to copy? I'm not sure what the "on-demand" package is. And how does importing that package allow me to import the mac package?

    Thanks,
    Cary

CaryC, if you have the .dmg file (which is a disk image file much like an .iso; copy it to a Mac then double-click on it to mount it), you can install the protection directly onto the Lion machine, then make it managed using this document.

How to convert an unmanaged SEP for Macintosh client to managed
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH131585

Mithun's instructions are for importing the base files (SEP_Mac.*) into the SEPM from the DVD file, which you can then use to export managed packages from the SEPM. You can't import the client installer (mpkg) into the SEPM.
