AOFO: Initialization failure on C:. AOFO used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

Created: 04 Oct 2012 | 3 comments

Morning,

1 of my domains has recently had its setup overhauled.

Now:

Its a remote domain

1x SAN

2x Server 2008 Enterprise x64 with SQL 2012 - Windows clustered and SQL clustered

3x server 2008 Standard x64 web servers - No clustering at all.

Went live Monday and since then any job on any of those 5 servers will fail with:

Backup- server.domain

-AOFO: Initization Failure on "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

V-79-10000-11213-

It doesnt matter if i uncheck the option to use AOFO - it will still complete with this exception

Disabling the firewall/Av makes no difference

2010R2 - No updates available apart from 2012

Anybody any ideas please?

Hi Andrew,

There is 1 update not listed and that is to go to BE 2010 R3 with SP2. If you have maintenance in place with Symantec, it's simply a case of downloading it from the link below, and upgrading your media server.

You can run LiveUpdate to install SP2 and any subsequent patches before push-installing these to your remote servers.

IF you do the upgrade, make sure you grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders before doing anything. This will allow you to rollback manually if need-be.

That said, run the following command from a command prompt: vssadmin list writers.

Your writers should all be stable and running. If not and they're in error or failed/failing, restarting the server normally helps.

Thanks!

Hi Craig,

I dont believe we have maintenance - does that mean no upgrade?

We are running a NFR copy provided to us from Symantec.

I have checked all the writers on all 5 servers and all of them are stable with No Error.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Should still be OK to do so as you have the licenses which are able to be used with BE 2010 R3...
