  • 1.  Applicability rule for 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office

    Posted Nov 29, 2011 11:33 AM

I have to install the Microsoft Single Sign On Assistant but it has to be installed based upon the Office version installed.  So if the version of Office is 32-bit it needs the 32-bit client.  If the version of Office is 64-bit it needs the 64-bit client.  I have a mixed Office 2007 and Office 2010 environment so the applicability rule needs to be applicable to wether it is 32 or 64 bit not a particular version of Office.

You will want to have two packages/installs. One for 2007 and one for  2010.  You should be able to add a single Applicability Rule for Processor Type.  The options are x86, Intel Itanium..., and x64 (AMD or INtel)

Once you create the Applicability Rule, it will be available for the second package.

You'll want to create two software resources and one managed software delivery policy.  One software resource is for the 32-bit SSO assistant, and is applicable if Office 2007 32-bit or Office 2010 32-bit is installed.  The other software resource is for the 64-bit SSO assistant, and is applicable if Office 2007 64-bit or Office 2010 64-bit is installed.  Test both of these independently along with their software detection rules.  Once they function independently in separate Managed Software Delivery policies, you can combine them into a single policy.  When it executes, only one will be applicable.

I ended up using the following:

    Office 2007 or 2010 x86 Applicability Rule

    Registry Key Exists
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook

    OR

    Registry Key Value
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Bitness
    Value: x86

    Office 2010 x64 Applicability Rule

    Registry Key Value
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Bitness
    Value: x64
