Application and Device Control: Device id changes when connected to another computer

Created: 05 Apr 2013 • Updated: 05 Apr 2013 | 5 comments

I've used "Application and Device Control" to block all USB devices but allow specific ones, ie. usb printer, Magicjack etc.,  using the Device ID. It works fine, but if i connect the same device to another computer, it get blocked. When checked, I see that the device id changes for the same device from computer to computer. I can't use the Class ID because what I want is to allow only specific devices in same class. Any suggestions?

The device ID of the USB changes? Not sure how this can be since the ID is hardcoded to the device. Is this a USB?

Please click the "Mark as solution" link at bottom left on the post that best answers your question. This will benefit admins looking for a solution to the same problem.

The device ID changes because the USB device doesn't have a hardcoded Serial, so Windows generates one smiley http://rtshiva.com/2009/05/19/usb-specification-and-windows-limitation-on-serial-numbers/

If the devices are going to be allocated to a specific PC then why not add the device ID generated on that pc?

Not sure how it change but solution is available

class id is divide in 6 part if you can choose it till vendor then all device which are related to hp printer that is accessible and if you selected till model then same model printer is accessible, in your case you can choose till model because your sevice serial number getting change but other detail not because that is fixed by vendor

below is the syntx and example

<class>\<type>&<vendor>&<model>&<revision>\<serial number>

<class>\<type><vendor><model><revision>\<serial number>
Example
SanDisk Micro Cruzer - USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_SANDISK&PROD_CRUZER_MICRO&REV_2033\0002071406&0

Choose
SanDisk Micro Cruzer - USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_SANDISK&PROD_CRUZER_MICRO*
