Application Package on USB
I have a license to a mathematical package - currently the license is paid by my firm, but the license is tied to my name and I am free to use it on as many machines as I like as long as I don't share it with another user.
While the application is currently installed on my desktop, I want to use the application at home on my personal laptop, since the license anyway allowed me to do so.
But I don't want to clutter my home laptop with another application, and would like to install the application on my USB External Hard Drive instead. Among all the products, Altiris SVS (Personal Use) seems to be the most suitable product.
Questions:
If I want to use the application from the USB External Hard Drive, are the following correct:
(a) I need to install Altiris SVS on the home laptop at least, else I can't read any VSA files. Am I correct?
(b) While installing the package, I need to choose the installation-location as the USB External Hard Drive. Am I correct?
(c) After installation, if should extract/export the layer to USB External Hard Drive as a VSA file, then I can use the same VSA file on any other machine as long it has SVS installed. Am I correct?
(d) Finally - and the part for which I got found NO answers on the net - suppose when I first install the application and download the VSA on the USB External Hard Drive is picked up as "F:" drive on a machine. Next if I go to another machine with SVS installed, where the USB External Hard Drive is picked up as "G:" drive & if I import the VSA - will the application still work? If not, what is the solution?
--> Also, I am a total "NON"-techie, so I would be grateful if anyone who answers uses simple terms ("for dummies"). Thanks.
Not correct
Hmmm, not completely correct:
A) Yes you have to install SVS at home.
B) NO, Just install it on the c:\Program files or were ever you want.
C) Yes, absolutely right.
D) Import the VSA on the machine were you wish to use it. And start using it.
Remember: The USV drive or whatever is just a carrier to transport the file. It will not run from the drive, neither do you need to have the drive inserted while using the application.
