I am new to altris, but have a lot of sccm/sms/novell deployments. I need to create a package for application upgrade. I already have a vendor msi and created a TRANSFORM. Trying to read symantec doc and not getting a clear picture. Can someone try to point me to a site with some examples and maybe explains the difference between packages and policy’s? Software and software catalog?

Thanks for any help.

In short, you will create a new software resource which holds information about the software, the command line to install the software, the package containing the software files, and other such information.  This resource can then be added to either a Quick Delivery Task (which deploys the software using the "run now" task mechanism) or a Managed Software Delivery policy (which deploys it as part of a policy -- usually used to deploy to one or more computers as part of a scheduled push).  The package contains the files and is part of a software resource, which is part of a task or policy, which is assigned to computers, which runs the task or policy using the command line against the package files it downloaded.

The articles I've linked to expand on this as well.  Read them, and then read them again!

Does this help?

Thank you for the links.

Are there any resources with step by step examples?

This does step-by-step for deploying Windows XP SP3.  It's not a perfect example because the detection rule is created by PMImport, not by the administrator manually, but you should be able to fill in the gaps from the article.

It also helps demonstrate the 'Updates' and 'Supercedes' associations.
