Are media id unique? For ex: EA1234

Created: 11 Feb 2013 • Updated: 11 Feb 2013 | 4 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

Rman backup tape expired in netbackup catalog as the retention was only 1 month.

Media id were identified and recalled from offsite

Helpful to get some clarifications on the following

1. Does successful recall of Media id EA1234 from offsite mean that the tape has not been overwritten? Say if had been reused and overwritten, does the Media id change and could not have been recalled successfully as Media id EA1234?

2. Can the expired Media imported into nebackup catalog (Phase 1 and Phase 2) and rman restore could be done given that rman catalog still has the information?

3. if rman/netbackup were to backup to the same tape again later in future, would it generate the same Media id EA1234?

1. Does successful recall of Media id EA1234 from offsite mean that the tape has not been overwritten?

Yes. Unless it has been used 'offisite' in another NBU environment for backups....
Double-check NBU retention level. If expired in NBU, take care when you put tape back in NBU - this can cause tape overwrite. Retention levels should be long enough as well as write-protected until expired.

2. Can the expired Media imported into nebackup catalog....

Yes.

3. if rman/netbackup were to backup to the same tape again later in future, would it generate the same Media id EA1234?

Yes. Media id is unique. If barcoded, this can only change if barcode is physically replaced and re-labelled with NBU.

Media ID is unique accross the EMM server, it will not chage, untill the barcode on the tape and the intenal lable has been chageed using bplabel command.,

once the media has been recalled, it can reuse and ovewritte( if does not have valid images) but the media ID will not change,

2. Can the expired Media imported into nebackup catalog (Phase 1 and Phase 2) and rman restore could be done given that rman catalog still has the information?

yes, it can be done, untill data got overwritten.,

so better way to freeze the tape, and move to another volume pool where it did not get assing , then go for the import job.

3. if rman/netbackup were to backup to the same tape again later in future, would it generate the same Media id EA1234?

when you say same tape, that you can identify only with media id EA1234, so if its showing same media ID, that its same tape.

Hope this helps.
