This issue has been solved. See solution.

The problem I'm having is

1. it seems this is the only place you can actually edit the Software Products Catalog, is this correct?

2.  I need to manage a software product like Microsoft office, standard and professional and Enterprise, however as seen below I limited to the software installs I can associate based on the syntax I can string together limited to the concept of " Microsoft + office + professional"  But if you and "standard" you loose all entries because "+" indicates "and" not "or"

of course I could just say "microsoft office" but then I'd get standard, pro and enterprise.

So the question is there any other way to associate installed products manually?  Being limited to what installed product names you can string together seems so limited considering how much effort the developers put into making this more robust.  I wont even go into my issues of trying to create products and associating custome install associattions.

and shouldn't be edited.

You can use the pipe '|' symbol for OR. Not sure how it works with other operators.

So you could try:

Microsoft + office + professional|standard

I dont want to edit what Symantec included I want to create my own.  Office was just an example.  Lets take winzip for example.  Maybe I want to include Winzip trial, winzip professional winzip pro.  Though our suggested option does do as you say (or)  it adds all products with the word Professional including wsf-tp professional sql professional.  So basicly if this is the only place where you can associate installs to product to Symantec is breaking the first rule of good IT service management, You dont make your processes fit the tool, you make the tool fit your processes. right now 7.1 for complex software licensing and contract management just doesn't work.

But in your example of Winzip, couldn't you just put winzip as the Software Name? I'd have winzip in the Company filter too.

And for my example does:

Microsoft + office + professional|Microsoft + office +standard

work?

If I put into the "Software name" filter:

adobe +professional|standard

I only get things with "adobe" in the Software name. So you should be able to put:

winzip +professional|standard|trial

I'd still put "adobe" or "winzip" in the "Company" filter and leave it out of the "Software name" filter.

These are all good suggestions, and workable I think for what I need. But I think you are missing my point. The point is:

Is this the only place you can make this association. If so it just seems silly. You can make direct associations in all the other resources by using a resource association picker. but not for this. I was just hoping for a better way. This way is time consuming and tedious.

But again thank you.

So, when Winzip 10.5 comes out and is detected in your environment it's added along with Winzip 104, 10.3 etc.

I've noticed that only Software Resources with inventoried installs are shown when creating a Software product, I'll have to test sometime what happens when the last install of a particular release is removed, does the assocaition get broken.

One other place the association can be made is when Resolving Duplicate Software Resources, a drop down box appears on one step. But I suspect this is a legacy item from earlier versions and I'd recommend against using it.
