  • 1.  Auditing computers imaged by Symantec Ghost 11

We were using Symantec Ghost 11.0.2.1573, were switching platforms because of budget reasons. I heard there was way that Symantec can audit the computers that have been imaged by Ghost is that true? Also all of images are.GHS files if we convert them to another platform will the Ghost "audit" file still be on those images or will we have to sysprep a new image from scratch?

I believe that Ghost places some sort of marker on the hard disk the first time it is run, so consequently I would be surprised if this could not be audited in some way.

If you convert to another platform then you will need to create a new image for deployment in the format required by your new platform. If that happens to be SCCM, then the image will be a WIM file. You could, of course, deploy a Ghost image to a hard disk and then immediately create a new image with the tools from your new platform.  I don't know whether there will be any identifiable Ghost content within the images, so if you are concerned about licensing issues, it would be safest to bite the bullet and recreate your images for the new environment.

Thanks, yes were moving to WDS. I wasnt sure if you could just image a disk from GHOST turn it off so it doesn't boot up. Then actually capture it thru WDS PXE and covert to a WIM, but would it still have the marker from GHOST?!?! Thats my real question.

Sounds like I probably need to start from scratch and sysprep both X86 and X64 platorms again, oh well.....

Image a disk via Ghost then run ghost.exe on the imaged machine and check whether it reports that Ghost is running for the first time or not. If it thinks it's running for the first time then the Ghost marker was not carried over.

Ultimately, you could give Symantec a call and speak with one of their licensing people to verify if there is a license issue or not, if you capture a deployed ghost image to a wim file.  Or have a look at the very long thread titled "When will come Ghost 3.0", and seek out postings near the end by David Evans who is the new PM for Ghost. If you contact him via connect he may be able to advise you also.
