AUP Expires: xxx date, will any function (including Carbon Copy) stop working?

Version No: 6.0.6074 (SP 3 + R10)

Has anyone experienced a failure of Carbon Copy or any other function of CMS level 1 stop working if you allow your AUP to expire?

We have seen this in our environment back in 2006 and CC stopped working and when attempting to connect to a client we were advised of the expiration.

Our AUP is due to expire on 5/29/09 and I have read this KB article: Article ID: 26424 which states the opposite.  I even contacted Altiris sales who in turn spoke with a engineer, same message as the article, nothing will stop working, only that we will no longer be able to download updated versions of the PMImport.cab file.

Fuctionality will remain.

As far as I know nothing will cease to function you will just not be able to dowload updates. My company had the same question for Symantec a few months back and was pointed in the same direction as you. My AUP is set to expire 9/27/09. Please let us know if anything has changed or if you experience any issues 5/29/09.

AUP expiration—All functions will continue normally. However, if newer versions of the solution are installed, they will not function

Update to My Original Post

Be advised, confirmed the following from Altiris technical support today:

  • With Carbon Copy Solution 6.1, when license expired, a pop-up dialog appeared. Furthermore, the Carbon Copy connection was blocked. This explains the behavior we experienced in 2006 when our AUP expired prior to applying updated license.

  • With Carbon Copy Solution 6.2, the behavior changed. When the license expires, the connection is not blocked. A pop-up dialog is supposed to appear, to notify the user that the license has expired. Then the Carbon Copy connection will proceed as expected. Assuming that you are running the latest Carbon Copy version 6.2, you will not lose functionality when the license expires.

Based on the information I provided to Altiris, they have created new KB article # 47242, “How does license expiration affect Carbon Copy Solution functionality?”  The article is not made public yet but will be shortly.

Also, Carbon Copy is EOL as 04/2007.  Support will continue until the end of 2009.

pcAnywhere is current replacement and is available via NS 7.0 only.
