Autoloader Problems
Updated: 01 Nov 2010 | 11 comments
Hello
I am having a problem with my new TS3100. I am running windows server 2008 standard, with BE12.5. All devices show up in the device manager, however when I go to BE, Under the robitics library I get a tape drive, slots, and a device called Missing 1. I have no idea what this is and I can't get rid of it. It is always offline and when I reboot the server it comes right back even after I delete it. Any ideas?

Hello, We will force Backup
Hello,
We will force Backup Exec to see the Missing Device
1 : Go to the Media TAB
2 : Right Click on the Drive and Disable it, right click and Delete..
3 : Follow the same step on all the Drives and the Medium Changer.
4 : Restart Backup Exec services.
Hope this helps...
Its a best practice to have a "Support Contract" with Symantec...

I tried just what you said and if came back the same way. The ts3100 tape drive has to sas ports and I tried the other port and it just comes up as a stand alone drive. So to recap all I have done.
Deleted all drives out of backup exec and restarted the services and redetected the drives using the wizard. - Didn't work

Deleted all drives out of backup exec and then windows restarted the server, redetected with the wizard - Didn't work

Hello,
Lets run a test job on the 1st Drive through Backup Exec.
The VENDOR for the 2nd Drive is missing. I think thers is some issue with the 2nd Drive.

For verification:
1 : Stop all the BE Services.
2 : Turn ON the Removable Storage Service
3 : Install IBM Drivers for the Drives and the Medium Changer
4 : Run NTBackup and see if we are able to run a backup on both the drives...
Hope this helps...

Hi there, I assume that if
Hi there,
I assume that if the IBM has 2 half-height drives in it, that you bought and installed an additional LEO license?
BEWS ships with 1 license free for 1 drive. Any additional drives need an additional license.
Check that out and post the results here...

This ts3100 is installed on a bran new 2008 windows server, I am running BE in the 60 free trial mode, I have not put in my keys yet. From my understanding, when you are in the 60 day trial mode, everything is unlocked and available to use.
Windows only sees 1 tape drive
OK, well, if Windows only
OK, well, if Windows only sees 1 drive, then BEWS wouldn't see the other.
What you need to have a look at is SCSI ID, and make sure it is correct. Following on from that, make sure that termination on the autoloader itself is correct, and that it is terminated. Are there any additional shipping locks that might need to be removed?

I went through the manual and
I went through the manual and made sure there were no more locks, there was only 1, and it is removed, this autoloader is sas, so there are no special terminations that i am aware of. There is only one cable from the card in the server to the autoloader. The autoloader does have 2 ports, however I am told that I only need to use 1 port. I have tried switching the ports, and when I do that BE shows it as a stand alone drive and not an autoloader.
OK...the device is on the HCL
OK...the device is on the HCL for Backup Exec 12.5. I can suggest a couple of other things to check:
1. Make sure Removable Storage is stopped and disabled, if it isn't already.
2. Upgrade to BEWS 12.5 SP3 if you haven't already. Dont' forget to push out RAWS to any remote servers should you be backing them up.
3. Download the latest DDI (device drivers) for Backup Exec 12.5. Install them, and then run the Device Wizard from Tools to install the drivers for your drive. In Windows Device Manager, the robotics should be showing as Unknown, and the drive needs to have the Symantec drivers installed.
Try those, and post the results...

I did all of the things you ask and still it comes up with missing, it just dosent make any sence to me. Hopefully these pics will give you a better picture of what is going on.
OK...1 other thing to do is
OK...1 other thing to do is to run that wizard again. There is an option to delete any devices that no longer exist. It has worked for me in the past, so try that.
Failing that, I am going to suggest you completely remove the autoloader as follows:
1. Open up Device Manager, and delete both your medium changer and the drive. In Backup Exec, do the same thing.
2. Shut down the autoloader, and disconnect the cable.
3. Shut down your server, and start it up again. Once booted, verify in Device Manager that there are no devices. BEWS will detect what is seen in Windows, but verify that it is not showing any hardware. If it does, delete that too.
4. Shut down Windows again. Connect the autoloader, and start it up. Let it finish its startup procedures.
5. Once done, start up Windows. Once started, check in Device Manager...it will show the medium changer and the drive.
6. Open up BEWS, and run the device wizard again to install the drivers.
