The autoreply message cannot be saved. The client operation failed.

All users receive this message when trying to create an out of office auto reply: "The autoreply message cannot be saved. The client operation failed." At one point I saw a virus error message. In searching for answers,  I came accross a user that indicated stoping the SMSMSE services on Exchange solved this problem. Has anyone experienced this?

Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchage. 6.5.  I believe this problem stems from here.

A quick Google search come up with this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909802

Are you using Exchange 2003?

It is highly doubtful that Mail Security could cause this, but it is easy to test by turning off our service and performing the same operation.

Greetings,

You may want to check to see if you have enabled content rules that check for blank subject and sender.  Outlook stores a template if you will ,of what the user is wanting in the message body.  Exchange creates the email first and then fills in the information from the sender second.  The downside is Exchange is passing SMSMSE a copy of the blank subject and sender to SMSMSE first before filling out the rest of the details.  If the rule is enabled SMSMSE will fire against it.

It is definitely something with SMSMSE that is causing the issue. Disabling services and rebooting fixes the problem. I disabled content filtering and rebooted but the problem returned. I guess I will open a case with Symantec.

Thank you for your replies.
