B2D Device Reverting to Read Only

Created: 20 Aug 2013 | 5 comments

Hi All,

We have a Windows SBS 2011 Standard server running Backup Exec 2012 with two B2D external hard drives that are alternated for the daily backups that we do.

An issue I'm having at the minute is that every evening when the backup is set to start BackupExec seems to set the storage to "Limit Backup Exec to read-only operations" to "Yes" so the backup can't run and just sits there trying to find a drive to backup to.

I've gone into the Backup Exec Settings and into Storage and ensured Media overwrite protection level is set to None as someone suggested on this forum and I've also updated to the latest Service Pack and installed all hotfixes that were brought back by LiveUpdate but the issue still exists.

Could anyone suggest anything to help fix this issue?

Confirm the below settings

1) Click Backup Exec button --> Configuration aand Settings --> Backup Exec settings

2) Select Storage

3) In Disk Devices box, change the "Limit Backup Exec to read-only operations on disk-based storage if it has been detached for at least XX days"

Also refer to the document below as there was a fix release for this issue in SP2. Have you updated BE 2012 with SP2 yet?

Have you loaded SP2?

If not, do so and then check again...I assume the permissions on a folder-level in Windows are correct to allow writes?

Thanks!

Hi,

SP2 was installed after reading another forum post but the problem still seems to appear.

I've changed the the limit backup exec area to higher than 1 day (now 2) so in my mind it should see the drive has been detached for only 1 day and work fine.

The reason we have a setting called "Limit Backup Exec to read-only operations on disk based storage if it has been detacehd for at least" is the following scenario

A long term backup to removable disk is performed, this disk is detached and sent off-site. This disk remains off-site well beyond any retention settings that may have applied to the original backup jobs (just because you have no reason to bring it back)

Then one day you suddenly have a need to restore some data from it.

Now if the disk was still read-write, DLM activity will have taken place even though that disk is off-site, which will then mean that within 4 hours of reconnecting that disk to the media server the backup sets on the disk would be erased. This would result in you being unable to restore that data.

With the disk set read-only, whilst it is detached, then no DLM activity can take place until you make it read/write.

Of course if you know you are about to do a restore from a detachable disk then setting it manually to read-only prior to connection is good practice.

BTW the default for  "Limit Backup Exec to read-only operations on disk based storage if it has been detached for at least" is 14 days, some customers were advised to set it to shorter as part of the workaround for http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH196201. This issue is now fixed in Servcie Pack 2 so you should install SP2 and then consider setting back to 14 days (unless you had another reason to change this value)

If you need to make the disk storage read/write again, click on the disk storage, select Properities and change the Limit Backup Exec to read-only operations option to No.
