Backing up ESX servers

I currently run Backup Exec 12 and would like to able to backup our VMWare files on our ESX servers.  If I down load the trial version of 12.5 would that give me ability to upgrade my veriosn and the ability to backup the ESX servers?

You're going to get absolutely nothing out of upgrading to 12.5...no support for anything new to be honest, and this includes Windows Server 2008 R2 which is already a couple of years old.

Upgrade to BE 2010 R3 with SP2 instead, and you will have a lot more support for the newer software (including vSphere 5.1 and Windows 2012 when the Beta completes), as well as hardware, and be capable of a lot more (like deduplication!).

You need to apply for new licenses, so contact a reseller or Symantec's licensing department.

Before upgrading, stop the BE services and grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders first. Then perform the upgrade. Once done, run LiveUpdate to install SP2 and any additional patches, and then push-install these patches to any remote servers you have to update them.

Also make sure that any software/hardware you have is listed on the BE 2010 R3 SCL & HCL to cover yourself there.

Just be aware that upgrading doesn't give you the option to backup the ESX hosts at all...but you can backup the VMs using the AVVI agent, or using the RAWS agents installed on your VMs.
