Backing up Exchange 2003 remotely direct to tape with GRT on 11d
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 3 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
I am having issues with trying to remotely backup an exchange 2003 server with GRT enabled.
The backup is direct to tape and the exchange database is not stored on the server running backupexec 11d 7170.
Is this possible?
Do I need the Open File Agent installed (as mentioned in some tech support docs)?
Any help much appreciated.

It is perfectly fine to
It is perfectly fine to backup data to tapes while using GRT. Although, there will be limitations involved, during restores. When you would like to restore individual messages, the entire exchange database will need to be staged to the local disk and from there granular information will be extracted. So, it will be a two stage restore. For this reason, disk backup is ideal for GRT. Open file option is not needed to be installed. It is also not recommended to be used with Exchange 2003, because of inherent limitations with recovery storage group. So, Open File option may be disabled from the backup job when backing up Exchange database.
Please mark it a solution, if this is useful.
Thanks
And you cannot run
And you cannot run incremental or differential GRT backups to tape, restores wont work if you do that.
So, run only FULL GRT backups directly to tape.

My apologies, the above document does not mention the open file agent but instead talks in the first section about the BackupExec Advanced Disk based Option on the media server.
Is the Advanced Disk Option necessary? It states that you must have it?
Thanks
