Backing up a Hyper-V Cluster
I have a 3 node 2008 cluster running hyper-v. The VMs can be moved from node to node and I don't see a way to select the VM for backup from the cluster as a whole; I can only see the VMs running on their current host, so if a VM gets moved to another node the backup will fail.
Is there a way to do what I want? Or is this an upcoming feature?
Please take a look at the link Below. If you look at the Hyper-V section of the SCL it talk about how Backup Exec handles clustered host machines.

Sorry, but I don't seem to get it. (Or it doesn't work as expected)
1) I can't seem to backup any Hyper-V machines as soon as the machine is clustered. Log shows:
Snapshot provider error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
Writer Name: Microsoft Hyper-V, Writer ID: {66841CD4-6DED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE}, Last error: 0x80042319, State: Failed during freeze operation (9).
2) It even gets worse if the machines fail over. After that the error shows:
Snapshot provider error (0xE0008516): Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.
What am I doing wrong? I selected the machines via the physical node name of the cluster, as this is the only point where I can acutally see the Hyper-V agent.
Any suggestions?
Rick
Apply all the Microsoft Patches in this technote.
Your issue is a Microsoft problem but the recent MS fixes from last week should resolve your issue.

Hi! The problem still applies... I can only select the Hyper-V instances on the physical computer name, not on the logical cluster name. In case of a failover the backup crashes due to the fact that the Hyper-V is no longer online on the physical node, but on the second node in the cluster.
Any other ideas?

Hi!
I experience the same problem so did you solved your problem?
I am seeing the same thing.
I am seeing the same thing. Is there a solution to this problem. I need to be able to backup my VMs within the cluster and I highly prefer to not specify a specific host. Is there a work around/hotfix? Is this going to be a feature of the 2010 version? Will this work in Windows 2008 R2?
No comment about current
No comment about current issue with current version, but Backup Exec 2010 will feature support for Windows 2008 R2 Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) and standard failover volumes with Hyper-V.
Can you provide a link to a
Can you provide a link to a feature list for the new version? Do you know how to sign up for the beta test?
Another maybe more important
Another maybe more important question. If I were to select "virtual machines" in my selection list on all nodes would BE then decide to backup what ever machines are active on this node. Is this theory sound?
