This issue has been solved. See solution.

in documentation is mentioned that for backing up MS Exchange 2003 with BE i have to install the Exchange Management Tools respectively the Exchange System Manager in the appropriate version at BE server.

As described in this discussion i do NOT need the Exchange System Manager for Exchange 2003.

Now - what is the right solution?

My problem is, that you cannot really install the Exchange System Manager for Exchange 2003 at a W2K8R2-System... but we have to ensure that individual mails can be restored from the backup.

Thanks for any help!

You don't need any management tools for Exchange 2003...only Exchange 2007 and up.

I've never needed this with previous versions of BE and have been able to do both GRT backups and restores.

Check the Best practices for Backup Exec 2012 Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server:

For Exchange 2003 the only requirement is the latest version of Esebcli2.dll.

so i just have to copy this dll from the Exchange Server to the same path at the Backup Exec server? Nothing to set in the registry? Registering the dll?

And has the file version exactly the same at both servers or may there be a newer one at the BE server?

Thanks in advance!

I've generally had separate backup servers and Exchange servers and never needed to copy anything to the backup server to enable Exchange 2003 to be backed up!
