Backing up Virtual Server 2005 VMs
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 1 comment
We have a server running Virtual Server 2005 with a couple of Windows Server 2003 guests. What is the best way of backing this up? Currently we have standard backup exec agents (12.5) on all of the machines backing up the data. This means that if we have a problem we will have to reinstall the servers just as we would do with physical machines. This also means that Virtual Server is not backed up.
I know that there is an Backup Exec VM agent so I'm trying to decide what the best strategy for backing everything up would be....
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris, If you want to back
Hi Chris,
If you want to back up the entire VM and do granular restores out of it, the VM agent is the way to go. Read up more here...(Sorry the link is so long!):

If it's simply a case of backing up your data, then normal Remote Agent for WIndows on each of the VMs will do the trick, and I'd look at backing up the configuration of the Virtual Server 2005 server itself.
However, the VM agent would give you the best method of protecting your entire environment. Comes down to cost really...
