Backuexec is asking for Tape, but its already there!

Created: 17 Jan 2014 | 7 comments

I want to restore old mails which were located at old tapes that aren't in the catalog  anymore. I did inventory and catalog at one Tape, the job now is asking for another Tape(obviously the second Tape on a full backup) but Import Job(including Inventory) over the "Portal" doesn't work, Backup exec did not realise that I put in the Tape, just telling "Unknown media" in the slot.

The second Tape also isn't in the catalog so I mention Backup Exec can't identify the Tape as was it is and did not look at it, I can't run inventory and catalog on the Tape because backup exec says "No Idle device", obviously because of the job still running!

What can I do?

Stop the Job and run "inventory and catalog" on the other Tape, hoping that Backup exec then recognizes the former one?

I am getting crazy that there isn't a simple "import this slot and do catalog" Option there!!! If I put the Tape into a library slot then import button on this slot greyed out!!!

Chris,

What you can also try is to uncheck the option " Request all Media in the sequence for catalog operations" which can be cofigured from location Backup Exec button >> Configuration & settings >> Backup Exec Settings >> Catalog.

Let us know the result of the same.

Did the configuration, but this does not affect the running job. But anyway I think I usually need both Tapes to do the Restore!

Question is now can I cancel the the job and do Inventory and catalog on the second Tape and does Backup exec then recognize that there is already the first one(the inventory and catalog took hours at the first Tape)?

What is the standard procedure for this case?

I don't understand how this can work, there are mostly more than one Tape on old backups, the Job queued after the first Tape and no chance to do anything because library is blocked for second "inventory and catalog"?

Chris

Hello Chris,

It will not be effective for the running job so you will have to cancel the same. Also Yes Backup Exec will be able to store the catalog of the first tape so there is no need to re-catalog the same. Just cataloging the second tape should be good ones the first one is removed.

Usually the Import/Export job should be successful to swap the tapes.

If you are using barcode labels, then when you import a tape, it will automatically be recognised by BE.

If you are not using barcode labels, then you have to do an inventory after the import, for the tape to be recognised by BE.  You can check the Inventory After Import option when you do the import so that inventory is automatically done after the tape is imported.

In your case, if you are using barcode labels, the second tape would automatically be recognised and would be used by BE.  If your are not using barcode labels, then you have to cancel the running job because you need to inventory the tape before it can be used.

The sure way of doing this is to put all the tapes in the backup set into the library, inventory/scan them and then catalog them.

I am not using barcode labels!

Anyway, backup exec now recognizes the Tapes and inventory is running without problems.

Catalog Job stops with error:

Job Completion Status
Job ended: Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 3:21:52 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0000900 - The requested media is not listed in the media index and could not be mounted. To add the media's catalog information to the disk-based catalogs, run an inventory operation on the media and resubmit the Catalog operation.
Final error category: Backup Media Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-2304

In the Job log you find multiple entries:

"The requested media (sequence number 28 in the media family being cataloged) was not listed in the catalog's media index, and therefore, it could not be mounted. No data from this media will be included in the disk based catalogs. Performing an inventory operation on this media and rerunning the catalog operation should resolve the problem."

I did inventory and cat several times, nothing changes.

The backup job on this Tapes are from a former exchange installation on a different machine, can this possibly cause the problems?

What means uncheck "Use storage media-based catalogsto my catalog? Did I lose all the catalogs?

I am not using Barcode lables. Anyway backup exec is now recognizing the Tapes, Inventory is working fine but catalog stops with Error:

I did inventory and cat several times nothing changed!
The server on this Tapes isn't the same as the actual server, can this cause any of the problems?

I found this:

Can I solve it this way?

Hello Chris,

Those are the same steps in the technote which I had suggested in my post. Try to perform those steps and then run the Catalogs.

As said earlier your previously catalogged data will remain as it is.
