Backup and Duplication - Optimisation help
I have a Netbackup Master server at the head office with 32GB RAM, 2 CPU X5650 2.66GHz (16 core total) which is connected to a Storagetek SL500 with 6 drives LTO 5.
My Netbackup Media server is in our datacenter (Cloud) 12 miles away, with 48GB RAM, 2 CPU X5650 2.66GHz (16 core total) which is connected to a LUN of 16T, 7200rpm (nearline).
Actualy, I do not use the multiplexing on my Storagetek drives and my maximum concurrent jobs of my media server storage unit of 16T, is 6.
My backup start at 5pm to 7am and my duplication is starting at 7am to 5pm.
How I could optimize my systems?
- does I should run the duplication all day long, instead of 7am to 5pm?
- does I should increase the maximum concurrent jobs on my media storage units?
- does I should use the multipliexing on my 6 Storagetek drives?
The differntial backup's runing monday to friday
Full Backup during the week-end
I'm asking because everything is running 24/24 and more client servers is comming very soon.
I want to reduse the backup and duplication time.
Thanks for your help

So.. if everything is running
So.. if everything is running 24x7 now, you might want to start assessing your capacity issue - add more tape drives.
As for the questions:
Not recommend since your duplication is from tape to tape. Running your backup and duplication the same time, can cause media contention. Both jobs are trying to get hold of the tapes and you may experience more queuing issue and error.
Not unless you have more tape drives.
You can consider this, but I would try with multiplexing=2 first before using something higher, because I do not want restore to become slower. If MPX=2 helps, keep it that way and if it does not, you can increase it further. I would do that on the backup side only, not duplication.
The Duplication isnt tape to
The Duplication isnt tape to tape, is LUN to Tapes.

ok all the backup from our Datacenter are managed from the media server, also in the Datacenter, and the backup are going to the 16T LUN, attached to the media server, the backup is running from 5pm to 7am.
when the backup schedule is done, at 7am, the duplcation's starting and all the backup on the 16T LUN are Duplicated to the headoffice SL500 Storagetek which is attached to the Netbackup Master server.
The bandwith between the Datacenter and the Headoffice is 4GB.
Similar to my answer on the
Similar to my answer on the other post you have it is worth increasing the number of streams used by the disk storage unit and also let you duplication run during a larger window
I am guessing due to you having a duplication window that you use disk staging - so If your backups start at 5pm then why not let the duplications run from 7pm with a schedule frequency of every 2 hours - that way they will trickle across doing whatever has finished by 7pm, then check again at 9pm and so on - by the morning there will only be a couple of larger ones (the last to finish backing up) left to duplicate so it will be far more efficient
When using enterprise (advanced) disk we use Storage Lifecycle Policies which duplicate as soon as a backup has finished which tends to be very efficient - the closest you can get to that using disk staging is a 24/7 staging schedule with a 1 hour frequency
Hope this helps
