Backup To Disk Folder Question

I am looking at redesigning my backup locations and I had a question.  Should I setup separate backup folders for each backup group, or should I back them up to the same folder?  Currently I have them separated, and I wanted to know if there was a benefit or not.

Thanks,
 Adam

Currently that is how I have  my Backup-to-Folder configured; the location/destination is the same name as the server/backup job.

Example:

Daily/Incremental:
X:\SERVER1
X:\SERVER2
Full/Weekly:
Z:\FULL\SERVER1
Z:\FULL\SERVER2
My Full/Weekly backups are also copied to a set of disks which are then sent offsite (a basic GFS rotation); so I keep a full backup onsite as well as one offsite.  We do not have any tape drives.  My CTO instructed me to retire the Exabyte 430 and go D2D and D2D2W (Disk-to-Disk-to-Wire).

It use to be that the backup jobs were setup to store them all into one folder/location; incremental/daily backups went into the root of X: and my full/weekly went into the root of Z:.

The reason I decided to seperate them was to make it easier "visually" to see my backup media sets and know where they are quickly.  Otherwise I had to run a report to determine which media set contained the backup data I was looking for.

I should also mention that my backup is a very simple and basic one made up of a couple of SQL database tables, a single Exchange 2003 server (which I'm doing both a database and brick level backup) and your typical user data (Word, Excel, PDF, text files, etc...).  My full backup is just over 1 TB.

So not a lot of data and I don't have a lot of servers to manage/backup (11 servers total).  There are probably many reasons not to set it up this way but all I can say is that it works for me and my infrastructure.

That all said, you need to determine if separating yours out makes sense for you and your infrastruture.  Hope this helps.

I can email you some screenshots on how my backup folders are setup if that would help.  Let me know.

I would appreciate that, I want to make sure my backups are as efficient and as complete as possible.  Seeing your schedule will help me decide what I need to do.  I'll send you my email address.
