Backup Exec 10 - Exchange 2003 -> Backup exec 2012 and exchange 2012

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi forum members,

We've an old backup solution with a tape station and Backup Exec 10.1d application installed on a Windows 2003 server. We're going to migrate to Exchange 2010 and update the application to Backup Exec 2012.

The question I've is... Is it possible to restore an mail/mailbox(exchange2003/BExec10.1d) to an Exchange 2012 machine with backup exec 2012? If not... Is there any solution so we can still use our old backup tapes if we need any information? Keeping an old exchange machine running offline is not an option.

Best Regards

M

No, it is not possible to restore previous exchange versions to the newer versions. This is a limitation due to changes in the Exchange database format.

What you can do, is restore to disk, and use third party tools to extract data from the Exchange database.

Your recommendation is to copy all our old exchange tapes to disk and buy another tool to have the opportunity to restore it to the new exchange?

Can you PM or give me tips where I can buy/download this third party tool? :)

You don't have to copy all exchange tapes to disk. Only when you need to restore.

Backup Exec is still able to restore previous tapes, so you can duplicate a tape to disk, and then extract with tool.

Exchange extracter tools like:

Er, actually Backup Exec 2012 can restore to a *.pst, so why buy additional third part applications to do the same thing? Read below...

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH191622

You can do your upgrade to Exchange 2010 followed by your upgrade to BE 2012, and ANY Exchange 2003 data you need restored you would simply restore to a personal folder and then copy to the mailbox!

If you were using BE 2010 and back I would recommend a third party application but you will spend money where BE 2012 does it anyway...

Thanks!

Can Backup Exec restore a previous backup (backup created with old backup exec version) to PST ?

Backup Exec can read previous versions of BE. Symantec have designed it like this, and that is how it works.

If BE can see the Information Store on tape to duplicate it to disk, then it can see the Information Store to restore to *.pst. Simple as that really...

Check the TN I posted which states which versions of Exchange BE will do a restore to *.pst with!

Thanks!
