This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello,

I have recently been given the job of administering a BE 10d installation. I would like to ask you good people for your advice and suggestions about any critical updates/fixes I should apply. I would also appreciate it if you could point me in the direction of any good online doco and resources for BE 10d (I have got a copy of the admin guide from the KB).

I would also appreciate if someone could point me towards some info about the difference between the AOFO VSP and the VSS options, and when to use them. One of the first issues I have noticed is an error encountered when backing up the local win2003 system "AOFO: Initialization failure on: "C:". Advanced Open File Option used: Symantec Volume Snapshot Provider (VSP). Snapshot provider error (0xE000851C):...". I have checked that there is enough free space and I have rebooted the system all to no avail so now I want to learn a bit more about the AOFO options that I have available.

Here are the details of the BE installations.

* Backup Exec 10.1 r5629. Updates include SP3 and hotfix 48.

* HP Ultrim 1x8 G2 Autoloader

* Installed on Windows Server 2003 SP2 (fully patched)

* Backing up mostly Windows 2003 Domain Controllers and File Servers

Thank you.

VSP is only used for Windows 2000.  Since you are using Server 2003, you should be using VSS.  You either let AOFO automatically choose the provider or specifically specify that you want to use VSS as the provider

Hi,

1. Since Windows Server 2003 and up uses VSS, use that in your backup job. When you select AOFO just leave the defaults. There should be no reason to change this manually.

2. I know you have checked for free space, but check these links anyway as there are some possible fixes for your error:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/snapshot-provider-error-0xe000851c-0

3. Use AOFO when backing up files etc. Turn it off for databases. However, you don't mention any DBs like SQL or Exchange so it would be fine to use AOFO.

Thanks!

Thank you all for the answers. The "AOFO: Initialization failure" messages went away as soon as I switched to VSS.

I did have the AOFO configured to "Automatically select open file technology" but for some reason BE seemed to be selecting VSP.

Anyone reading this who wants more info on the VSP and VSS options can find it in the BE 10d Admin guide under Appendix H on p.991. Here's how to find the admin guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38847.
