Backup Exec 12.5 Administration Console Communication Error

Backup Exec 12.5 Latest rev. and hotfixes
Windows Server 2003 SP2 - Media Servers
Windows Xp Professional SP3 - Admin console workstation

I have recently upgraded five media servers to BE 12.5. When I use the Administration Console to connect to the three media servers in our remote offices, the coneection is made and the Job Monitor populates, then almost immediately I receive "Communications are down with Backup Exec Services. Check to see if Backup Exec Services are running on "SERVERNAME". I know the services are running and if I RDP to this media server, the console works fine.

Since this doesn't happen when connecting to the two media servers in my local office, I am suspecting a network/firewall issue. What may have changed in the console connection process from 11d, since I did not experience this with that Admin Console? Also, is there any logs that can be looked at or generated in BE since the Windows event logs on both the Worstatin running the console and the media servers show nothing?

Thanks for your help,
Michele

Hi Michele,

I take it that you upgraded the Console too...?

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.

Yes, I did! I am using the

Yes, I did! I am using the most updated version of 12.5.

My Security guy checked the firewall and could find not dropped traffic when I duplicated the error. It appears the communication between the services fails, but I cannot find anything to troubleshoot it.

I just ran the SGmon and

I just ran the SGmon and created a debug log for the remote media server having the connectivity issue compared to the local one that is not. One line that stands out different is and occurs right when the communication error pops-up is -

BKUPEXEC: [02/23/10 15:20:40] [0018]      [Info] Empty VSN received

Any Ideas what this is indicating?

Thanks.

Hi, What happens if you use

Hi,

What happens if you use the IP address of the server itself? Does it give the same error???
I have never seen that error before either.

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.

Hi Craig, Thanks for the

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the suggestion, but the error exists even with connedting with the ip address.

I will persue a case with Symantec, since there VSN error message from SGmon seems to point to some issue.

Craig..thanks for checking. I

Craig..thanks for checking. I have an open case with Symantec and it has been escalated to the second level support, but still no solution. I have verified that is it something with the traffic over the wan, since the problem occurs from my local site only to the remote site and visa versa if I try from my remote site to local...

I have had my network admin look at the traffic and packets from the erroring sessions, but nothing stands out. Something is different in version 12.5 since it worked in 11d.

I will update with the answer (if I ever get one ;)
