Backup Exec 12.5 DDT solution for Lacie 6TB drive and autotapeloader

Hi,

I have 10 servers on a business network that I need backup using a DDT solution. I have a dedicated backup exec box with exec 12.5 license and 10 remote agent licenses. I have a gigabit switch which all the servers and nas are connected to, and a tapeloader that uses SCSI.

I know (by reading these forums!) that I need to create some B2D folders for the NAS and use job policies for the copying of data to the tape loader.

Are there any extra licenses I need to purchase for the NAS and HP Tapeloader?

Do you have any suggestions on the type of backup to roll with each night? would it be a big ask to have a full normal backup each night from each of the servers, or would it be more feasible to role a 'monday - full' and do differentials for the remainder of the week? As the NAS is not use for anything else besides backup I can copy the data to the tapes during the following day.

Would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Hi Paul, THe autoloader would

Hi Paul,

THe autoloader would only have 1 drive, and the standard installation of BEWS includes 1 license for a tape drive. If it included 2 drives, you would need an additional LEO license. In your case, not.

As for your NAS device, you need to look into NDMP. You can read up on it here...

With regards to the strategy to use each night, it depends on the speed of your LAN (1GB is fine), size of your backups (larger will obviously take longer), and number of files (millions of small files take longer) amongst others.

For quick backups, using a differential backup is the way to go. For restoring though, it would take a bit longer with the number of sets needed with this.

Using a FULL backup might take longer, but would only need 1 media set for restoring purposes.

If your backups are expected to take a couple of hours, I'd personally go with the FULL backup, and stream it off to tape the next day. If longer, use differential.

A bit confusing, but hope it helps!

Laters!

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.
