Backup Exec 12.5 Final error: 0xe000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Created: 14 Nov 2013 | 35 comments

I am using Windows enterprise 2008 Server with service pack 2

I can't get my backup to go through I've already tried

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

I've also tried

Re-register the VSS components see below

Sometimes re-registering VSS core components can fix errors. Copy the following commands to Notepad and save the file with a ‘.bat’ extension. Run the .bat file by opening a command prompt and entering the .bat file name.

cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
vssvc /register
net start swprv
net start vss

I've also tried setting the volume shadow copy service to auto because it was set to manual and force started it and the backup failed anyway

After it failed I noticed even though volume shadow copy was set to auto the service was no longer running

I've also tried rebooting the Server

that also failed

how do i check if be is updated with latest sp ?

how do i update remote agent on server 2008 enterprise?

Vishal Shinde's picture

Hi,
you may update your Backup Exec via Live update.

It can be run from tools-->options

once updated, you may push the RAWS update via push install process.

to get more details about BE 12.5 updates, please ref:

How to get updates for Backup Exec - Service Pack, Hotfix, and Device Driver updates

Yes be is updated to the latest sp. live update says it is.

Remote agent? I back up directly on the server is this necessary?

Anybody have any other suggestions?

CraigV's picture

No, no need to push-install anything to remote servers that don't exist.

Thanks!

Hi,

I assumed that your Windows server was a remote server.

Now that you have clarified that its the same system, you do not need to update Remote agent and I may like like you to provide the following details :

1. Is there any disk activity related application, (used for defrag..etc.)

2. Do you have DFS installed on the same server?

3. What is being backed up?

4. Do you have CPS installed on the same server.

Kindly attach the job log with the comment if possible, or you may copy the error message in details.

Kind regards,

1. Is there any disk activity related application, (used for defrag..etc.) No just the built in defrag if it ever gets defragged

2. Do you have DFS installed on the same server?
No DFS

3. What is being backed up? Exchange email Exchange 2007

4. Do you have CPS installed on the same server.

what is cps? as far as I know no.

Vishal Shinde's picture

Are you able to backup files and folders?

also scope if you have any errors in the event viewer from source ESE, ESEBACKUP,ExchangeIS etc.

Hi,
Please find the following documents closely related to the issue.

Microsoft Exchange 2003/2007/2010 backup fails with an error "E000FED1: A failure occurred querying the Writer status"
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125176

Exchange backups fail with "A failure occurred querying the Writer status...Last error: The VSS Writer failed, but the operation can be retried (0x800423f3), State: Failed during freeze operation (9)"
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH148079

Addtionally, do send me the event from the event viewer as suggested, while the backup is triggered and also the details about the snapshot providers installed.

you can find the provider details by running the following command at the command prompt with admin privileges.

vssadmin list providers.

the second one with the registry edit seems like it might work.
But I want to be 100% sure because the event ids are different.
Advice is much appreciated.

Vishal Shinde's picture

It seems you have more than one provider registered on a Windows Server -based computer,

the default behavior of Volume Shadow Copy Service is it tries to start the providers in the following order:

Hardware provider

Software provider

System provider

So to resolve this issue:

Take the backup of your registry.

Locate the following registry subkey, and then right-click it:

HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore

Point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type UseMicrosoftProvider as the name for the new DWORD value, and then press ENTER.

Double-click UseMicrosoftProvider. To enable the new feature, type 1 in the Value box.

Press ENTER, and then exit Registry Editor.

Restart the server.

This should resolve the issue

MSExchangeIS (452) First Storage Group: Database F:\Exchange\Database\Corporate.edb cannot be incrementally backed-up. You must first perform a full backup before performing an incremental backup.

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

This would indicate the backup that I was trying to do was an incremental and that I have to perform a full backup before trying this.

I plan on doing that friday because a Full backup has been taking us a full 24 hours. The weekend is probably the only time I can afford to lag the network that long.

This backup was handed over to me by the person who worked here before me that is why it is taking trial and error to get it going.

What is the maximum number of databases i can mount

there are like five databases. if i reboot the server one i don't need mounts.

i disconnect it and mount one i need that doesn't automatically mount

I've never seen anything about a limit to the # of databases that could be mounted.

Is your verify job scheduled as part of the job, or configured to run after the job completes? If not scheduled to run after the job completes, try that option and report back here.

Thanks!

Yes thanks your registry edit fixed the vss.

Creating a new User in backup exec to do the backup seems to have fixed the mapi issue.

However I have only gotten a good backup of the public folders as it stands.

I am planning on doing a full info store backup tonight to see if it goes through.

During the day it would be to taxing but i can confirm doing the public folders alone has backed up successfully.
