also i read that this appear from the MS VSS however my windows updated and its fine..... really the problem boring me

Please confirm this fix. I have been getting the updating catalogs problem for about 6 months now. I accidentally ran a manual backup after i was getting this "Updating Catalogs" issue. After canceling the job that was hung, the manual "Copy" job was run, and all my incremental backups worked fine after that. Prior to this manual backup, the only way i could get backups to work successfully was to reboot after the "Updating catalogs" error, then run a full backup, and then continue with differentials.

My process now is Full backup on monday, then 6 more differentials the rest of the week. In addition, I run a manual "Copy Only" job every 2 days which overwrites the previous job. Since I started running the scheduled Copy job, I have not had a job hang.

The copy job was created as a policy:
Copy Method: Full - Copy the files
Compression: Hardware if available, otherwise software
use GRT: checked
Perform consistency check: checked
  * I don't believe this affects a GRT backup so it doesn't matter
Continue with backup if consistency check fails: checked
  * I don't believe this affects a GRT backup so it doesn't matter
Advanced open file option: Unchecked

Please let me know if any of this works for other people.

Hello, just reinstalled a Backup exec 11d for my client (moved it from an old server to a brand new one)
after completing a EXCH DB backup job  (which was very fast) it is now hanged on "updating catalog".
even after i have canceled the job it still hanged on a "cancel pending" status...the succer just wouldn't die
i had to kill the backup server (restart) in order to stop it.

tha version of the 11d is SP5.
i'll appreciate any assistance on this.
