Backup Exec - 2 sites using ReadyNAS as B2D, Replicate to tape?
Updated: 17 Nov 2011 | 4 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
We have a client with 2 sites. They are thinking of putting a ReadyNAS device in each site as a B2D target for Backup Exec, and replicating the site backups to the other site's ReadyNAS. We'd also like to replicate the information for both sites out to tape from a single location though for longer retention. Can we do this through Backup Exec by connecting to the local ReadyNAS?

There should be no problem
There should be no problem backing up to the ReadyNAS device. However, duplicating the backup either to tape or another ReadyNAS across a link will be a problem if your bandwidth is limited.
ReadyNAS just uses RSYNC to
ReadyNAS just uses RSYNC to send files to another ReadyNAS system. BackupExec doesn't have to be invovled at all in this process.
From there, on the remote side, you can have a BackupExec server just pick up the directory of BKF files and send to tape.
Or even better play with the BECMD file, import all the files in that directory into BackupExec, then duplicate to tape.
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
Replicating or copying BKF
Replicating or copying BKF and IMG data outside of the Backup Exec duplicate process is not recommended as due to the way bkf/img media names can be re-used by the media server at a later date if you ever need to restore from older versions of the media recovering them will cause inconsistencies between the BEDB content, the BKF/IMG content and the Catalog content which will then casue problems during restore (not usually problems that can't be worked around, just problems that considerably add to the workload and time taken to recover data.)
Duplicate Backup job
Hi,
If you have bandwith to do it, the easy way will be to use "duplicate backup job". You can create a job to duplicate either an existing backup job, or duplicate a backup set immediately following a scheduled job.

This is an easy, and automated way of moving a copy of the backup to another location, if you have the needed bandwith.
