Backup Exec 2010 backing up VMWARE ESXi and running as a VM
Updated: 27 Sep 2010 | 8 comments
I have a single ESXi server with internal tape attached to it. Is it possible to install BE 2010 on a VM and back up other VMs on the same ESX ?
Thanks

Hello,
Yes, it is possible to install BE2010 on one of the VMs and backup other servers like normal Windows servers. You need to install Remote agents on the Virtual Servers.
Hope this helps...
Its a best practice to have a "Support Contract" with Symantec...

Thanks a lot. Would I be able to backup the other VMs on the same server ? i.e. the actual vmdk files ?
Thanks

Hello, No, you wont be able
Hello,
No, you wont be able to Backup any VMDK file as all the virtual servers will be treated as physical servers with remote agents installed on it.
If you want to backup the VMDK files you need to install BE on a physical server, install the VMWare Agent and backup the VMs.
Hope this helps,...

Is official statement of Symantec? Poorly I didn't find anything on the Symantec Support Homepage.

Hi Bixio,
I'm sure that it ain't Symantec's official statement, as there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't have your BE Media Server running on a virtual machine and backing up other VM's.
Running full "image level" backups of another VM's, in case you only have an ESXi, you would need to have a license for that. So, you should have at least minimum license which enables vStorage API's from your ESXi, i think that cheapest version of VMware license would be Essential.
Of course, usually you would need to use NBD (backup over network) setting when backing up VM's, since your BE Server (running on Virtual Machine) wouldn't have access to your ESXi's storage.

Hello JT_T
Thank you for your answer.
I'm just testing the Backup-Scenario with a BE 2010 Media Server running on a VM (vSphere ESX 4.0 with License (not i))
During the Backup, BE2010 makes a snaphsot of all Virtual HD's of a VM and attach the created snapshot on the media-Server VM. This works great with all VM's, except the VM running BE2010. During the Backup of the BE2010 VM's, BE create also a snapshot, but instead it dettach all vhd and the vm crashes.
