backup exec 2010r2 not working after win server 2008r2 service pack1 applied

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

At the weeekend, applied ( windows service pack 1 to windows server 2008 r2)  running  backup exec 2010 r2. Tried running backups, which load media ok and start running, but hangs on system state backup, problem would seem to be related to to microsoft volume shadow copy service as this is where it stops and waits...

Normal data will back up OK, this is affecting the system state backup only... backups (incl system state) ran fine, until Win svr 2008r2 service pack 1 was installed, then we got this problem of system state not backing up.

Please bear with me as I have not been with company very long, so am not totally familiar with product just yet...

Any help much appreciated.

frank schubert..

Check the status of all the writers on the media server and on the remote server in question.

"vssadmin list writers" is the command to check status

Hi,

Normally a reboot of the affected server fixes things, but you can also try to reregister the VSS *.dlls on the server in question. This is what should have been mentioned above in order to fix them. Any writers NOT in a stable and running status would be in error...

Follow the Symantec TN below on how to do this:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH70486

That said, you can also upgrade to BE 2010 R3 if you have the opportunity to do so as it fixes a number of issues experienced in the previous 2 versions.

Thanks!

Hi CraigV,

thanks for the reply, we did this at the weekend, and did server reboot.  Sorry to say, still no system state backups...

frank.

...then try the VSS *.dll reregister. You don't need to restart the server and it is a non-intrusive operation.

Hi, thanks again for the reply, this has been done, and still can't get the system state to back up (other data is fine). It has only happened since sp1 (win svr 2008) was applied, as we had a good backup (incl system state) before this was put on server. Wonder if this is more a microsoft issue than a symantec one???...

kind regards,  frank.

...if you can't upgrade to BE 2010 R3, then run LiveUpdate on your server and install any outstanding patches before running the job again.

If it fails, try running a large-enough backup of that DC to a local disk on it. Check and see if it succeeds there...

Hi CraigV, sorry for delay in reply but had to go to second site for the afternoon. Have tried what you suggested, and got same result. I am going to try

a win backup job to see what happens with this, but I am beginning to think it is a problem with VSS running  but backup exec thinking it isn't (if that doesn't sound too unlikely).

Will let you know result of win backup tryout.

I am very grateful for your help so far.....

frank.

Hi CraigV.

Here is the log etc of the win svr backup, I googled the error, but the answer on the MS technet which was to apply a hotfix wes listed as not relevant to the server, as the event id was 517, not 5 as this error retrieved.

Hope this will guide us towards an answer !!..

Please see the error logs below when trying win svr backup. I have tried googling the error code, and the fix was listed as a hotfix, which when tried to run was listed as not relevant as evnet id for hotfix was 5, but this is event id 517.

Thanks for all you're help so far,

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I have already tried that resolution, but the eventid is different, the link is for eventid5 but the actual eventid is 517. This is proving to be a bit of a problem, but I guess when we get the resolution it will all make sense...

Hi

This could be due to space issue as described in the link & by looking the error messsage above too

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc74212...

And as windows backup is also failing you should contact MS

Thanks & Regards
