This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

Im currently having issues on our BE 2012 server (again) and I am consantly getting the following error "The job failed with the following error: A backup storage read/write error has occurred."

I have tried to clean the tape drive with a brand new cleaning tape (which does not seem to take very long to complete) but this has not resolved the issue. Could somebody provide me with some advice on what i should look at next. Im suspecting a hardware error and was going to probably check for a firmware update next.

the drivers are up to date and all of the latest updates have been installed on BE and the server has been rebooted.

Regards

Leon

Hi Leon,

Get hold of your drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility (ie. HP has Library & Tape Tools) and run diagnostic checks against the drive (stop the BE services first!). This will show whether or not you have any hardware issues.

Thanks!

OK cool...just also make sure that the cleaning tape you're trying to use isn't perhaps past it's maximum # of uses.

Thanks!

Have run the utility and it has immediately found that there are significant improvements that have been made with the latest firmware. I dont really want to upgrade the firmware unless I have to as from what i understand it can be a risky process. At present I am carrying out a test function on the utility to confirm the status of the drive.

There are always risks with firmware, but just ensure that no BE services are started up, and also that the device stays powered up. I've never had an issue with firmware upgrades, but the next guy probably has for example.

If you ended up logging a call with Symantec this is what they would also check as part of their troubleshooting technique.

Craig,

Updated the firmware and the issue appears to be resolved. Many thanks for your help.
