A customer has DataDomain and wants to use this storage as a target for some Backup Exec data as well. But - he needs to use client side deduplication.

Can the DataDomain system be used - if only as "pure" disk/volume?

Any thoughts are appreciate

Hi bjorn,

Check below:

With the Data Domain being target-based dedupe, your client's requirement won't be met. The 2 links would indicate how it is supported, and how to set it up!

Alternative ways to access Backup Exec Technical Support:

With the DataDomain configured for OST (requires the BE Dedupe option), and the DD plugin installed on the client, I think that would meet your needs?

If you find this is a solution for the thread, please mark it as such.

This is often referred to as Client Direct.  When licensed properly, you can do client-side dedupe (To a degree) and have clients write to the DataDomain directly.

Dedupe from Symantec needs to be licensed, and BOOST from EMC.  You need your networking setup as such that clients can ping and reach the datadomain unit.  Then the OST client is installed on all clients that will be configured for client-direct

When setup, you'll see some cool stuff...  Like 7000MB/min+ jobs, or client throughput that seems to exceed their physical bandwidth...  This is the BOOST/OST function working.

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."

Ahh, so the DD Boost is what I see referred to as the DD plugin?

I believe Boost is what makes the DD a dedup appliance.  The plug-in refers to the DD OST plug-in which you must install on the BE servers to make them aware that the DD with Boost is a dedup appliance.
